Legio II Augusta at Battles Through History

Legio II Augusta is a roman reenactment group who I have joined up with recently. You may recall our display at Chichester which was great fun. Well this time it was on a bigger scale at the South Of England Showground for an event called Battles Through History. As you can see there were a lot of other reenactors and things going on which I got the chance to meet up with. Here are some highlights but also check out the photo gallery at the bottom for other photos.

Legio II Augusta and our gladiators

The Saturday was very windy, hence the need for a cloak, there were gladiator displays both days. I have been asked if I fancied training and giving it a go. I’d need to come up with a character in the first place, it’s something I am considering.

Legio II Augusta on the march

We managed to get some marching done. There were several newbies to this (myself included) but it went well. Learning the instructions in Latin can be tricky!

On this march we had Roman marching chants to learn

Dromedaries, and eagle and another famous empire

A few tents down was Seaxia, an early Medieval reenactor who had an eagle. It’s a Steppe eagle and needless to say we had to get photos with it. On the Sunday we got a photo of our Eagle with the real thing!

There was another animal with a link to ancient Rome. The dromedaries were used, alongside camels by Rome (I wrote a bit all about it). These two were very impressive and at one point fancied a nibble on the armour.

and then there was another animal, albeit not a real one. As a kid I loved The Empire Strikes Back and the person who built the original Tauntaun used in the film (David Whitely) was there with an interactive Tauntaun.  I couldn’t resist.

There was also a Biker Scout there as well. It’s good for Empires to network.
